Archive.org is a website database that includes a list of outgoing links a website has registered since its launch. When using this, it’s a good idea for one to view past links of both market leaders and competitors to compare brand changes and product rollouts. This tool is helpful when trying to find out more strategic changes that have gone on within a company. Once one has taken a detailed look at what’s going on in the past, it’s a lot easier to make an educated guess regarding the future.

Alexa.com is a website dedicated to traffic ranking. After one inserts a chosen URL into Alexa, the site will rank the URL in terms of total traffic. Alexa will also give a statistical breakdown of the traffic geography, sites linking in, and monthly visitor data.

When trying to figure out how people get to a site—for example, how one’s competitors attract traffic—this is a useful tool. Not only is it possible to learn what queries are working best, but one can see what demographics are searching those queries and develop a strategic plan of action.

Compete.com

Compete.com is a web analysis site that specializes in trends. Besides tracking a website’s total visits, it dissects those hits into categories including unique visitors, page views and their own “compete rank.” It’s a great site for competitor analysis, allowing one to look more deeply into a website and what people are doing from a web perspective.
