Why Leadership Strategies are so Important to Marketing Success

What does it take to create a successful business? In years past, it was finding the right people with the right skill-set. While that’s still important, what’s even more important is good communication and alignment.

What does this mean? And how can you make it happen?

I recently chatted with Michael Brenner – CEO of Marketing Insider Group and recognized by the Huffington Post as a Top Business Keynote Speaker. We had the opportunity to discuss leadership strategies for the digital and modern marketing age.

Influential Marketing – It Starts with Leadership

During our conversation, Michael told me a really interesting story. A business owner came to him for marketing advice. They wanted a marketing plan that would give them a great ROI. So, he gave them his advice and outlined what needed to be done to improve the company’s marketing campaign.

A few months passed and he approached the business owner to see how things were going. Well – they weren’t. The company hadn’t even implemented the marketing strategies yet.

When he first started doing this work, CMOs would come to him and say that their biggest content marketing concerns and challenges was ROI. This is basically the reason Michael wrote The Content Formula – he wanted to solve this problem for CMOs.

But then, when he followed up with the CMOs, he realized that the issue really wasn’t ROI. After they gave him a list of excuses why they hadn’t started implementing his suggestions, Michael realized that the issue wasn’t an ROI challenge – it was a leadership challenge.

Digital marketing has changed the way we do business, the way companies interact with consumers, and even the way CEOs interact with their employees.

It’s so important to recognize this change and then take the necessary steps to make sure everything is in alignment. Alignment means that everyone is on the same page and has the same goal. And to get to that point – it all starts with you, the leader.

Influential Marketing and Company Alignment Start with You

As a business owner, you expect those who work for you to do the job they were hired to do. They have the skills – now they need to do the work. But this isn’t all there is to running a business.

To be successful in what you do, you need to influence those around you – from those in marketing and product development to your customers. You need to make sure everyone is communicating effectively and in alignment.

And the best way to get that started is by being a good example. Talk to those you work with. Invite your employees to voice their opinion and share their latest research. Discuss what people (AKA potential clients) are talking about on social media. And most importantly, make sure you all have the same goal.

When you do this, you’ll influence those you work with to work to their full potential and you’ll influence potential customers to purchase your products or services.
